PROGRAM
GOALS:
The Medical/Dental Office Management Diploma Program will
prepare Students for an entry-level position as a Front Office
Administrator, Medical/Dental Office Insurance Clerk,
Medical/Dental Office Receptionist, Medical/Dental
Transcription, Medical/Dental Assistant, Administrative
Assistant, Computer Operator, or Billing Clerk with abilities to
work in Medical and Dental Healthcare Offices or Hospitals.
PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY:
The Medical/Dental Office Management Program of National
Polytechnic College is committed to excellence in education
demonstrated by providing a meaningful comprehensive entry-level
education program to Students, containing quality educational
instruction. The program supports the vision, values, and
mission of National Polytechnic College by offering a
Medical/Dental Office Management program that adheres to the
highest standards of educational integrity. In combination, the
eight program courses ensure the adequacy of a well-rounded
program through classes in didactic theory and integration and
acquisition of performance objectives in the real life setting.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of the Medical/Dental Office Management Diploma
Program, Students will successfully obtain the knowledge and
abilities to apply the following skills:
• Accurately complete, and submit various Medical/Dental
Insurance Billing forms (CMS-1500, ADA Insurance Billing Form)
• Anatomy and Physiology of all major body systems
• Apply HIPAA regulation in all areas (Patient Confidentiality
rules and guidelines)
• Basic computer knowledge using Microsoft Office Software and
Medisoft Patient Accounting Software
• Basic financial Accounting/bookkeeping procedures (Accounts
Receivable and Payable)
• Comprehension of Medical and Dental Terminology and
Abbreviations
• Dental Anatomy and Physiology
• Identify and apply Laws and Ethics within the healthcare field
• Knowledge of all Basic Medical insurance (Medical and Dental)
types
• Maintain office inventory of Medical and Office supplies and
equipment
• Medical Insurance Terminology and Abbreviations
• Medical Insurance/Reimbursement Collection procedures
• Medical/Dental office oral and written communication skills
• Perform administrative duties with minimal supervision
• Perform the proper obtaining of Patient vital sign
measurements including Ht and Wt
• Professional advancement strategies
• Proper usage of Medical/Dental Coding manuals (ICD-9 CM,
CPT-4, HCPCS, CDT)
• Typing skills of 45 WPM and 10 key by touch
• Understand their role as a Front Office Administrator/Coding
Specialist
• Understanding Medical and Dental charting with extraction of
diagnosis and procedures performed
This course program consists of classroom lectures, laboratory
(hands-on application), and externship.
OCCUPATIONAL OBJECTIVES:

MTAP 1 Medical Terminology, Anatomy
& Physiology – Part 1

Students will learn how to pronounce,
spell and define Medical Terminology Word Parts. Students will
obtain a clear understanding of all major body systems,
locations (body plane, cavities and regions), functions and the
ability to identify each structure with special focuses on the
Sense, Nervous, and Integument System.

& Physiology – Part 2

Student will obtain an understanding of each body system
structure and, functions and most common pathologies and
injuries related to the human body. They will be able to
differentiate between proper examinations position(s), imaging
techniques and how tumors are classified.
MTAP 3 Medical Terminology, Anatomy
& Physiology – Part 3

Students will learn about the Endocrine system functions and the
importance of homeostasis. They will also become able to
identify structures, spell, pronounce and have basic knowledge
of the disease process of the Reproductive, Cardiovascular and
Respiratory Systems. Basic financial accounting concepts for the
medical professions are reviewed along with basic Pharmacology
and Psychiatry disorders and treatments.
MDOM 4 Law &
Ethics/HIPAA/Communication & Writing Skills/Front Office

Upon completion of module the Student will have complete
knowledge and understanding on the Legal and Ethic standards
that pertain to the Medical Industry and interpret Medical laws
and practice ethical Medical decision making. Student will have
the ability to apply HIPAA and OSHA compliance regulations
rules. Students learn the skills to properly communicate
effectively through verbal, non verbal and written communication
with patients and the healthcare provider team. Comprehension of
the basic Front office; Telephone procedures, patient
scheduling, maintain patient confidentiality and opening and
closing of the office etc.
MDOM 5 Dental Terms &
Anatomy/Dental Charting & Forms/Medisoft Patient Accounting

Students will learn to pronounce and spell Medical and Dental
terms. The Student will be able to recognize common chart
abbreviations, various filing methods used in the Medical/Dental
Office. And also learn how to differentiate between active,
inactive and closed files. Gain the ability to apply HIPAA rules
in regards to privacy /release of patient information. And
receive a complete review of the Oral Cavity structures and
functions. And learn how to perform accurate clinical charting
(manual and EMR), form completion (Registration, H&P, Consent to
treat, finical, etc.) entering patient information into Medisoft
Patient Accounting Software database and computer basics.
MDOM 6 Medical-Dental Insurance,
Coding, Forms/Billing & Collections/Medisoft Patient Accounting

Upon completion of this module Students will become able to
identify Private Payer and Government Medical Insurance plans.
Students will be able to recognize and discuss the requirements
for Medical Insurance coverage eligibility. Become able to
identify Medical Insurance fraud and abuse. Have the ability to
correct dirty Medical Insurance Claims and create clean Medical
Insurance claims, distinguish between usual, customary and
reasonable reimbursement methods and know Patient payment
collection terminology and strategies. Also our Students will
learn the various methods of preventing Medical Insurance claims
rejection, Medical coding principles and Hospital Billing
basics. Students will learn how to verify Patient Medical
Insurance Coverage, effective Medical/Dental Coding Practices
(CDT, CPT-4, and ICD-9 CM). Instruction is provided on how to
appropriately complete electronic and manualCMS-1500 Medical
Insurance claim forms. Data entry and management of Medical
Insurance Claims into Medisoft Patient Accounting Software.
Using Medisoft Patient Accounting Software Students will learn
how to posting payments and adjustments and how to write
collection letters. Students will also obtain basic knowledge in
Accounts Payable and Receivable.
MDOM 7 Intro to Microsoft
Office/Bookkeeping/Medical Emergencies/Job Preparation Skills
Semester Units: 3.5

Students will learn the basic principles in Microsoft Word and
Excel as well as Introduction to the Internet. Students will
learn how to recognize the three most common bookkeeping
systems, identify common bookkeeping errors and how to avoid
them; importance of trail balance, maintaining petty cash,
review of A/P and A/R. Students will engage in discussion and
apply the concepts of Medical and Dental Practice Management.
Students will be able to identify Medical emergency supplies,
recognize and respond to Medical emergencies, perform CPR, apply
patient financial and medical education, perform the taking of
Patient vital signs. Students will learn how to conduct an
effective job search, prepare cover letter and resume, complete
job applications, perform mock interviews and receive
instruction on basic life skills.
MDOM 8 Externship
Semester Units: 3.5
Clock Hours: 160
Externship provides school-coordinated work experience in a
medical setting. Students gain practice with administrative and
coding duties and receives employer feedback.

*NOTE: At its
discretion, NPC may accept transfer credit for subjects or
courses completed in other postsecondary institutions when
comparable in scope and content to the MDOM courses taught at
NPC, by passing the written “Challenge” examination given by
NPC. Credit for previous training may be awarded, providing that
the Student successfully passes the examination with a minimum
grade of 70%.
Program Admissions Requirements:
1. High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent, or pass the
“Ability-to-Benefit” (ATB) Test.
2. Be at least 18 years of age
3. WONDERLIC admissions examination score of 17 or higher
4. Successful interview with MDOM program director or assigned
designee
Recommended Prerequisites:
1. Completion of high school courses in medical or dental
subjects

Requirements for Graduation:
Upon completion of all courses within the program with a grade
point average of no less than 70%, and after satisfactorily
completing all practical skills, knowledge assessments, and
competencies in the externship portion of the program, the
successful graduate will receive a Diploma.

Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM
Monday through Friday from 12:45 PM to 5:15 PM
Monday through Friday from 5:30 PM to 10:00 PM
CURRICULUM SEQUENCE:
MTAP 1, 2 & 3 is required prior to enrollment in MDOM 4, 5, 6, 7
MTAP 1, 2 & 3 or MDOM 4, 5, 6, 7may be taken in any order
MTAP 1, 2 & 3 and MDOM 4, 5, 6, 7must be completed before
enrollment in MDOM 8
